Steve Rooke, OEC Development Manager
“Reflective thinking is a powerful practice that we should all embrace, not just at work, but in our personal lives too.”
For Steve, participating in the Personal Leadership Programme has been an enriching journey, filled with insightful lessons and transformative experiences. For Module 5, which focuses on Crystallising Learning, the pre-work described this as “an opportunity to cement significant learning, make commitments to the future, and plan to stay connected to this learning moving forward.” That idea struck Steve, as both important and easily overlooked. Like many of us, he recognised how often inspiration from training programmes can fade if we don’t take time to embed it.
Determined to approach this differently, Steve chose to explore the concept of reflective thinking in greater depth before our final session. Though relatively new to him, his passion for learning and development—sustained even into the later stages of his career—led him to dive into additional reading and research. What he discovered reinforced how powerful reflection can be, not only in strengthening leadership practice, but also in enriching our personal lives.
To capture and share these insights, Steve has created a document that both reminds us of the benefits of reflective thinking and offers a curated list of helpful resources. This collection is intended to support colleagues in pausing, considering their experiences, and turning insights into meaningful action.
Reflective Thinking Resource: Power and Benefits
Reflective thinking is a powerful tool, especially when life feels relentless and work never seems to slow down. It’s not just about looking back; it’s about making sense of your experiences, recognising growth, and finding clarity amid the chaos.
The Power of Reflective Thinking
Reflective thinking is the practice of intentionally pausing to examine your thoughts, actions, decisions, and experiences. It’s about asking yourself:
- What did I learn? – What am I proud of?
- What could I have done differently? – How have I grown?
This process transforms everyday experiences into meaningful insights.

- Reclaim control over your narrative.
- Reduce burnout by acknowledging effort and progress.
- Stay grounded in your values and purpose.
- Make intentional choices rather than reactive ones.
Practical Ways to Build Reflective Thinking into Your Routine

- Mindful Moments: Use quiet time (e.g., during a commute or walk) to mentally review your day.
